2016 Smash for Wii U rewind

Credits

It’s already the end of the year. The last majors ended in an exciting way. With upsets, new players comming into the highlight  (mostly using Ryu, coincidence ?) and new characters, like Nairo's Bowser, coming into play.
The community is also on its toe for the incoming Nintendo Switch and the 2GG circuit.
For sure, 2017 will be a great year, with stories, new techs, meta disruption and memorable events.

But before we dive into next year, let's take a last look back at this year, and remember the best (and worst) of 2016.

Smash 4 official tier list is released at the beginning of February. Even if it gets obsolete immediately after because of 1.1.4, it is a great thing to create discussion and be able to keep track of the the tier list throughout the game’s history.

    Corrin and Bayonetta released:
After being teased at the end of last year, Corrin and Bayonetta are finally released in the patch 1.1.4 early february. This is the last release of DLC.

Man, what a DLC ride we had those two years !

     The end of Sheik’s era
1.1.4 does not come alone, it comes with
1.1.5, a major balance patch.
Both Sheik and Zero Suit Samus are heavily nerfed.
This rings the end of the Sheik era. As after Diddy kong nerfs in patch 1.0.6, Sheik stood as the undisputable queen of Smash 4.

     The dark time
It is all fun and games in that new metagame until people quickly figure out Bayonetta’s combo.

This is where the very dark era of Pre-patch Bayonetta starts.
With bread and butter combos which could zero to death and the best counter in the game ; Bayonetta tears apart the metagame. She is undeniably the number 1 in the tier list but is also very easy to use. Which leads to an extremely annoying character to watch and play against.
But the worst part is that the community stays totally uninformed whether a balance patch would fix her up. Because she is the last DLC character, we don't know if Smash 4 will still get supported by Nintendo, and Nintendo remains as silent as they have always been.
Virulent discussions are made to decide whether she should be banned or not.

     BIDOU appears to the world
Bidou is a technic that asks you to use special on your C stick, but lets you input 1-frame inputs. This makes some precise inputs much easier to use and also unlocks nearly impossible to execute movements. It was actually
discovered by a Japanese player in 2015, but it is thanks to My smash corner’s video in march than the world learns Bidou’s existence. How powerful is it? Is it the future of Smash 4?
Now that nine month have passed, it turned into a situational tech used mostly on precise characters or players who are willing to give up the ability to attack/smash with C stick.

In May 2016, the liberating patch finally comes out.
1.1.6 is released, and it's goal is clear : end Bayonetta’s
domination.
With all those patches, Smash 4 reaches a point of balance, it’s now 6 months after the patch, and at least 5 characters are fighting for #1 spot. Something the game have never seen before.

Panda global releases it's first ranking
May 18, Panda global gaming releases it's first power ranking. It ranks the top 50 players in the world based on results during 2015. This ranking is a great thing for the community to bring discussion and help new viewer learn about the scene.

      The king returns
After a long break (since late 2015), Zero (undisputable best player of smash 4 in 2015) comes back at Get on my level in May. After losing early to Mew2King, Zero makes a miracle looser run and finishes in final.

But Ally manages to defeat him in an incredible fashion.

Anti wins CEO 2016
June 24. After a tournament full of upsets, Anti takes CEO 2016. Not only does Anti wins it's first tournament but he makes the community wonder : "Is counterpick the future of the game ?"

     EVO 2016

Credits
July 15-17, Evo 2016 is hosted in Last vegas. It is for sure the most memorable event of the year with how much hype, emotions and stories it produced.

The most sportsmanship moment of the year

In the middle of the top 16 match, Earth and Zero decide to clink cans for toast. Should always be remembered:

Kamemushi takes the world by storm and shakes up the meta with Megaman :
After winning an Umebura (Japanese national), Kamemushi makes a confident statement :
he will be the best of the world. And with a character in the bottom of mid tier nonetheless.
And he almost does so, he showcases his
new Megaman’s footstool combo at Evo, making Mr.R looks like a punching ball. Then manages to defeat multiple other top names like VoiD and Zero to reach second place.
(Kamemushi recently changed his name to Kameme).

    8 characters in top 8
http://wiki.teamliquid.net/smash/EVO_2016/Wii_U
If we discard secondaries / pocket picks. It’s a huge 8 characters out of 8 players in the top 8.  For top 32 there are around 20 characters represented.

Ally gets crown as the new king.
At the end of a hard fought battle against Kamemushi, Ally wins evo. After beating Zero at Get on my level, confirming his victory at Smash'n splash 2 and now winning the biggest tournament of the year. Ally sets himself as the king of summer Smash 4, will he carry his momentum to the rest of the year ?

Top player Hyuga gets ban for sexual harassing
I want to remind sexual harassment exists, and it can happen even within our community. We need to be aware.
Here is a good article Melee it on me published about that.

    Second official tier list
The smash 4 black room releases the
second tier list in August, 22th.
Notable changes are :
- Cloud going from bottom of high-tier to top of top tier.
- Megaman jumping from bottom of mid-tier to top of high-tier thanks to Kameme’s work.
- Mewtwo shooting from low tier to high tier, thanks to 1.1.5 buffs and Abadango’s results.
- Waaaaay more character in the top tier section.

     MKLeo gets his visa
Because of visa issues, MKLeo's talent was unfortunatly locked outside of America and couldn't compete against the best of the world. He finally gets his visa in october.
Overhyped player or potential number 1 in the world? He now has all the cards in hand to prove his worth.

The number 1 character roller coaster
The debate for the first character in the game is really turbulent. It is first Diddy, then Cloud, then Ryu, sometimes Sonic’s name is thrown out. Now it is Bayonetta in the spotlight.

 Esam 's run at UGC
Since his fall from his pick in 2015, people were slowly giving up hope for Esam. But the player himself did not give up, and he showed it to the world in December at UGC where he gets third place. He also put a question mark on the Bayonnetta hype, cutting through two Bayonettas using his efficient SDI.

Zero saga, the curse remains and the futur remains uncertain
After a long tournament win streak (5 top tournaments won after super smash con) and winning convincingly all the runbacks in the exposition matches Friday, Zero was on it's way to win his 2gg event, break the 2GG curse and set himself as the undisputted king of smash 4. But Ally and MKLeo stops him on his track.

MKLeo wins one of the most stacked tournament in the year and shows the world that indeed, he is someone that must be feared.

And this is only a part of what happened this year, the best part. Or at least what I see as the best. Doing this article remembered me so many moments I forgot. Damn, all this during one year, during one great year !
The most memorable events, for me, were the 1.1.6 patch release and the Earth and Zero clip.
And you what will you never forget?

While you are here, why don't you take a look around my blog ? It is mostly posts about my main, Pit, but I also do general articles like training mechanics alone. You can also follow me on Twitter.

Thank you to u/SeaSquirrel and u/Pinuzzo and my brother Zik for their help.
