You are transitioning from casual to competitive, you know that sticking to one character is the best way to progress in smash and you want to main your favorite character.
You just learned that you should focus your time to one character, so you read different guides. And you end up with one charcter but you aren't 200% sure.
Or you want to pick a character from your favorite game : Kid Icarus Uprising.
And that character is Pit (or Dark Pit) ?
This article is here to tell you what Pit is all about, his advantages and drawbacks, what is enjoyable and what is frustrating about him so you can finally decide if Pit is your main or not.
Pit is a swordman, all-rounder and fundamental centered character.
He can be played effectivelly with a variety of playstyle going from offensive to campy. But his most optimal style is defensive/balanced (safe pressuring and punishing commitments) and a gameplan that vary according to the opponent.
He doesn't have many tech which is why he is based on fundamentals and easy to pick up.
Pit is frequently called the most fair character in the game for good reasons. Pit doesn't have blattant weakness but doesn't have much tools that screams "broken" neither.
No jank. If you loose you were not good enough, if you win, you were better than your opponent.
How does Pit fit into the competitive environement and what would he bring as a secondary ?
Pit is a mid to high tier character (ranked 25th in most of the world and 13th in Japan).
What Pit has, is a very balanced match up spread. He goes even with pretty much everyone and match up chart from @GerKoyu.
doesn't have match ups worst than 60/40. For instance, a
This is why Pit is a nice secondary. No matter who your main struggle with, Pit can easily cover it. And it doesn't ask for much of your time as he is fundamental driven.
He does get overshadowed by Cloud and Mario who are also simple characters with overall better match up spred. The only advantage Pit really has over them is that players have less experience against him than Mario/Cloud. But aside from that, Picking Pit over them is more a personal preference than a competitive decision.

Pit has solids air and ground games thanks to the disjoint of his hitboxes. Good dash attack, dash grab and Fthrow acting as his kill throw. He can juggle well mainly with Dash attack, Usmash and sideB. And has an excellent recovery (triple airjump, upB and sideB) which, combined with his air game makes him a good edge guarder.
He has a strong grab with combos/strings which exist until high percents and the Reraze combo.

But Pit lacks good kill move/kill set up. Outside of Dark Pit's sideB at the ledge, no option really kills before the three digits. He is not the fastest (fastest option is frame 5). Doesn't have the best combos. Have no hitbox on his upB. And if fairly combo food due to his lack of good landing options.

What can irritate you with Pit : hitboxes don't fit the animation, at our detriment. This applies to Fair and Nair. But hey, we have Dair :^)
No autolink hitboxes on his Usmash and Fsmash. So you can have that situation where you catch the opponent falling and he clips out of hit, avoiding the final hit. That's not common thing but that happens. And finally Pit also have that weird grab release when he is dash grabbing near the ledge.
I got asked this question one day : Do you think Pit is well represented ? And I have to say, yeah, I am happy about that, we have one pro player, Earth, and a long list of top player : Kuro, Kappamaki/KaPMK, Chompy, KiraFlax, Blue Beast, Kszw, ReRaze, Koyu, Plastic Poptart, Len.
